Before ordering a gift voucher I checked if the chefs cater for vegans and I was pleasantly surprised at the enthusiasm (vegans are often seen as awkward and mix ups with non-vegan food are ridiculously common). My girlfriend discovered a special offer for this restaurant and arranged it as a nice treat for both of us. She made sure in advance that they could accommodate a vegan version, and they assured her they could. However, upon arrival, we found that while there was soya milk, the cream was dairy-based. The waitress was apologetic about this mistake. The food itself was incredibly bland, lacking in flavor. We felt that we would have been better off with a simple supermarket meal deal. This is not a review but a warning: Castle Bow is no longer a restaurant, more a glorified tea-room. It seems that it now only serves afternoon tea. The reason for giving the warning is that when we called The Castle Hotel and booked a...table, as we thought, in Castle Bow, no-one mentioned that the restaurant had closed a few weeks ago. They just booked us into Brazz, formerly The Castle's second, less ambitious brasserie-styled eating place, without telling us we only found out when we turned up and the Caste Bow was in darkness. This has always been a birthday treat between myself and my friend. It was her turn to treat me, Feb 27th and as usual the food was lovely but unfortunately the service wasn't. The waitress in charge was very abrupt when seating us(we arrived early...but were happy to wait). She admonished a young waiter loudly in front of us. Embarrassing for us but awful for him. It was totally unnecessary. We have previously had afternoon tea at the Ritz, so we know we've had the best and don't expect that, but properly polished silver and individual tea pots not too much to ask? The big problem was the awful waitress. Unfortunately we will not be going again.
