Marmalade Coffee Shop

I had some time to spare before a business meeting in Wantage and came across this charming coffee shop. I prefer supporting independent businesses over chains, so I ordered a coffee and sat down. The coffee took a while to arrive, so I started checking my emails on my laptop. I was quickly informed that there was a no technology policy in place, which I had not been aware of since I am not from the area. The man who brought my coffee made a comment under his breath about the policy, which left a bad impression on me. I was just innocently passing time in Wantage, trying to avoid chain establishments. While I understand an establishment's right to enforce its policies, there are better ways...

This is a typical coffee shop that offers a variety of coffee, tea, hot chocolate, and soft drinks along with toasties and cakes. The staff were friendly, but I found the prices to be a bit high for what was offered. I ordered the 'home made sausage roll' and made the mistake of asking for it to be warmed up. Unfortunately, microwaving did nothing to improve the flavor of the sausage roll, which was also lacking in seasoning. Overall, it was nothing special worth writing home about.

Decent coffee. But, as others have said an experience poisoned by a bearded man demanding no laptop use. I'm not working here for hours abusing your Wi-Fi : I'm reading the breakfast news on an iPad, tethered from my phone, killing 15 minutes before an appointment elsewhere. So, congratulations for making Marmalade an unwelcoming venue that I and anybody I influence will avoid from now on. (Oh, and I was verbally abused outside for leaving an honest review)

Wanted a coffee, a sandwich and 20 mins to catch up with my emails. Not too much to ask? Apparently, laptops are not welcome!!! I can understand not wanting people sitting and working for hours while tying up a table with the sale of a single coffee. There are better ways of dealing with this. Some flexibility wouldn’t kill them. Otherwise, looked nice enough (hence two rather tan 1 star).

The setting and service at this restaurant are wonderful, and the staff is very friendly. However, the wait time for coffee is consistently too long. I have visited multiple times recently and have always experienced this issue. It's a shame.
