Auberge De La Madone

An unexpected gastronomic delight, a short hike from the campsite. We visited the restaurant on a Tuesday evening in June. The only options were 40, 55 and 60 Euro set menus. Not somewhere for a cheap or quick meal but great for an evening of dining. I had the 60 Euro menu. Not cheap but delicious. Lush caramelised onion on toast, tapenade on a crostini as teasers; tempura courgette flowers; fois gras on a bed of buttery spring greens on proper french puff pastry; rack of lamb with the smoothest mash potato and fresh strawberries nestling on whipped cream puffs on a light biscuit sponge like base with a few rhubarb shards and amber coloured petals for added fragrance. Auberge de la Madone provided us with the most memorable meal of our recent 2 week holiday. I had been following the restaurant on Facebook in the months leading up to our holiday and had developed a pretty high expectation that was not let down. We found our food to be very innovative with some very nice flavors. The wine recommended by our server complimented our meals well. Our server was extremely helpful in helping us navigate the menu as our mastery of french is marginal. The ambiance of sitting on the terrace over looking the beautiful perched village of Peillon is amazing. This restaurant requires effort to get to, but once there, you are well rewarded. Peillon is extraordinary. Only half an hour from Nice and a wonderful (small) village perche. And more or less undiscovered. There isn't a shop of any kind, let alone tourist traps selling tourist tat. But it does have this hotel, Friendly, comfortable, brilliantly located and with excellent food. This is a real find. There is some great walking in the hills behind and don't miss the cemetery above the hotel. Go.

This was our last vacation evening in France. And the best. The view and ambiance are beautiful, perched up in the heavens. It was so relaxing and enjoyable that our family talked well into the evening. It was a delight to receive such creative meals. I ordered the lamb and it was the best I have ever had. Everything was excellent, but I keep thinking about that lamb. The service was outstanding.

This lunch was perfect. The setting was amazing, the restaurant was beautiful and the food was sublime at a reasonable price, also the waiter was brilliant. I would come back tomorrow and the day after if I could!
