Altaussee on a Monday in mid August: Seewirt could not find it; three other restaurants closed. So we go to have dinner at the Hirschen, even though there‘s hardly anything under 15€ on the menu. We‘re shown to a table at the end of the restaurant and ... wait: no one brings menus until we ask for them. Drinks arrive promptly but one of them is wrong great! As we‘re very hungry we’re ordering when the drinks arrive... and then the big wait starts! 20 minutes, 30 minutes, 45 minutes ... at which point we politely inquire about our food. having a great friends evening with excellent food is always a good choice. if the restaurant plays along even better. deliciously looking starters, tasty hors d'heuvres w regards from the kitchen, wonderful fish and other main courses. all delivered w a smile, even though the wine choosing took a bit longer than planned due to discrepancies between the list and the actual cellar stock. we eventually got to choose ourselves, so all good in the end high end that is when it comes to the tap.
We did not stay here but ate in the restaurant here and it was fabulous... so good we went way out of our way to bring friends there the following week. In our 2 week stay in the Salzkammergut this restautant was a highlight and perfect for lunch after a walk around the lake... everything we ordered was terrific, friendly service accommodating parties of 8 from the U.S. speaking English so helpfully. You can not go wrong here.
We came on a Friday evening in the summer season and experienced good and quick service. As the name suggests, Zum Hirschen serves a tasty venison stew and an excellent deer, in addition to the obligatory wild-caught fish from Lake Altaussee. Our vegetarian enjoyed chanterelle stew with a dumpling. We had this with a mixed salad. Everybody enjoyed their meal.
