Hotel Dieu Restaurant

Awful service from a surly waitress who could do with additional training in customer service. Had to ask twice for water which when it finally arrived was both warm and unpleasant. The wait for food was almost an hour despite there being only 6 meals served ahead of us. When it did arrive it was definitely not worth the wait. During this excessive waiting time we asked for bread, a request that was refused as it comes with the plat , absurd for France! We all 3 ordered the hachis Parmentier de canard which is normally delicious and why we went into this restaurant in the first place having seen it on the menu outside, but quite frankly we literally had to play hunt the duck! This restaurant was on the recommended list from the hotel we were staying at nearby. It is located inside Hotel Dieu, we sat in their lovely courtyard. Perfect summer night. Got the pork shank (like an ossobuco) that came with small potatoes and vegetable. So tender and flavorful. It was delicious. Also got the porcini mushroom risotto. Again, beautifully presented and perfection. For dessert, we chose the black walnut tart. It was not the tart we pictured in many bakery. We were fortunate to discover this restaurant while we were walking around Sarlat, and decided to make a reservation. From start to finish, we had an incredible experience! It was easy to schedule a reservation, and the dining area is beyond lovely. Our waiter was so friendly and warm, and the food was divine! My husband is an omnivore and I’m a vegetarian, and we both LOVED our meals. The cost was also more than reasonable. Moreover, this restaurant has its own engaging history, having once been a hospital. We’ll definitely be back, and can’t recommend this establishment highly enough!

We managed to get a table for 2 at the last minute. During the summer make sure you book! It is quite hot in the courtyard so I used a hand fan. Since it is surrounded on all sides there isn’t a breeze. The service was great and the food was incredibly tasty and well priced. The menu is a bit different to lots of nearby restaurants which appealed. I would definitely go again in the future.

The foie gras was perfectly cooked and served with a sauterne. Also, a cassoulet and risotto was excellent. A quick walk from our hotel.
