Las Tablas Portugalete

We were in Bilbao on a cruise ship for the day and found ourselves in Portugalete at lunchtime on our way to the amazing Vizcaya Zubia, the world 's oldest transporter bridge. Las Tablas has a Menu del Dia for €11.50 which looked tempting so we gave it a go. We were not disappointed. I started with the chicken noodle soup which was delicious, as was my wife 's spaghetti Bolognese, all accompanied by plenty of good local bread. We both chose fish for mains. I had a beautifully grilled whole sea bass with lots of fried garlic and some potatoes cooked in olive oil. My wife chose the hake. Both were pronounced very tasty and substantial portions. There were several 'postres ' to choose from but...

A couple of locals recommended Las Tablas to me, when I asked for a restaurant with a Menu del Dia. I received a warm welcome and choose the delicious chicken soup, followed by a very fresh filet of hake and a piece of cherry cake. A bottle a excellent wine was included in the deal which I enjoyed enormously. This was a superb meal which including an extra bottle of water and a coffee, cost €14,40 all-in.

The menu del dia was adequate, nothing more. Pasta starter was plentiful but over cooked, leek starter also over cooked. Two fish main courses ok. Poor choice of dessert. Wine was included with meal but we were charged €12 as we asked for a different type, no mention made of cost. I'd recommend you go elsewhere!

A place to visit again and again! Best restaurant in the area. Homemade food, good value. Fantastic atmosphere, really friendly staff that make a you feel at home, remarkable attention and clean to the highest standards. Highly recommended for pintxos , menu del día or á la carte!!! ;

The space is small but very nice. You will find a typical Basque Country meal. Offers many dishes and well cooked. It has pintxos, a wide menu and a good set menu. Personel is excellent.
