I rarely write negative reviews, but feel I have to this once: we went to Le Bastion on a very hot evening in mid-August. The a/c was barely working and the main room was swelteringly uncomfortable; we were in a heatwave so can't blame the restaurant for not being prepared, but we were surprised, given the quality and price of the restaurant. It took half an hour for us to be served out first course, and, in all that time, not once were we asked what wine we wanted. Sommelier finally came over after we'd already had our appetizers (no apology offered). We decided on the set wine pairing as by then it was too late to discuss the wine list. Had dinner on the terrace last night. Three of us had the menu garrigue etc mer, one had the simple menu. We got the wine pairing and the wines were truly excellent. All regional and a wonderful cross section of whites and reds. We all found the food was trying a bit too hard. The jellied oyster came with cucumber, a horseradish cream and a balsamic jelly. You could barely taste the oyster or cucumbers. The smoked fish was rather good. But the veal plate had veal, fois gras, a mussel, a crevette tail, two kinds of artichoke and a crab bisque poured around it all to top it off. The mussel was delicious. The most incredible meal we have ever had in France! Not many photos as we were so blown away with the food and could not stop eating it! The menu was so reasonable for the quality of the food. Service was exceptional and the sommelier was fantastic with his wine pairings. Been to many Michelin starred restaurants, but this is beyond brilliant and deserves a star of its own! Well done!!! I just wish I lived nearby!! Do not think twice about booking!
Sometimes when you visit a place for the second time after a brilliant first visit, you are left somewhat disappointed. However, that was not the case on our second visit to Le Bastion. The service was excellent and the food more so. I just cannot recommend this place highly enough, and it is now our preferred venue when we have friends in town. Hats off, faultless again!
