Les Relais d'Alsace

We've been to Alencon a few times and our preferred restaurant was shut, so we wandered around the town and ended up here. The good points were that the waiters were friendly and helpful, they allow dogs in the restaurant, and our shared starter was really tasty. I had some sort of fish for my main course, which was fine but nothing special and very plainly served. My husband had an extremely meaty meal lots of different types of pork and sausages with choucroute which he didn't enjoy, but really it was his fault for ordering it. I visit Alençon a few times a year and this used to be a favourite. Last visit was a big disappointment. The service was mediocre. I had a ‘choucroute de la mer’ which was good, until I bit into a rotten prawn. When I reported this to the waiter, he brushed it away. Another in my party had tagliatelli with what should have been ‘une poêlée de St Jacques avec ail et persil’. There was 4 scallops and they had hardly seen any garlic or persil. Again, the manageress brushed the complaint away and considered that we just did not understand how the cooking should be done. It was not pleasant.

Found this Relais open on a Sunday evening when most other restaurants in the town were closed. A really good find. Frequented by local people. Great selection of bistro food and seafood, not expensive. Good for children too. Outside and inside seating. A most enjoyable meal.

Pretty decent Alsace restaurant, one of the very few places open on a Sunday night. Only half full but service was really quite slow but the oysters and choucroute were fine and the Irish coffee very generously laced with whisky!

Good and fresh. Regret they didn’t have crab as the sea spiders were too much work. I enjoyed the splashy presentation and good beer.
