Middle Earth Tavern

We went in for a quiet drink and after being seated we ‘met’ the landlord of this pub. Firstly, I will point out that he seemed very drunk so hopefully the following is out of character for him… He started off by insulting the place...that we live and then followed this up by giving one of the girls he had working for him a dressing down in front of the whole bar! We are not sure what the member of staff had done ‘wrong’ but the way he dealt with it left us all feeling awkward! If I were the young girl in question, I wouldn’t be working for him much longer! It was simply appalling! We certainly won’t be back!

This delightful pub has two main rooms and a lovely outdoor seating area with a fantastic view of the harbor. The interior is cozy, even when there are multiple musicians playing. The real ales are well-maintained and served competently at a reasonable price. During my visit, they had Abbot Ale and Copper Dragon (Silver Myst) available. They offer a variety of breakfast snacks and other meals, along with great coffee. The service is impeccable and everyone is welcomed warmly, even those who may be a bit unusual.

Visited on a day trip to Whitby, last visited while on holiday twenty years ago and was going mainly for the Lord of the Rings theme as we remembered it. The restaurant was shut (not sure whether for the season or permanently). There was no...atmosphere and the pub decor was in an average style, no Middle Earth theme whatsoever apart from the sign outside. The beer was fine. Overall disappointing and nothing like we remembered, a shame as so much could be done with this pub.

Enjoy stunning views of the harbor while sipping on two copper dragon ales for only £3.30 each. Pair them with some delicious Whitby Biltong snacks priced at just £1.50.

Short walk from the harbour, but great to be away from the crowds and sitting outside in the sun. Good beer, good service, great location. New favourite Whitby bar!
