"Lovely 17th century coaching inn, great character in a great location. We stayed in room 7 had its own separate entrance from the pub. Lovely spacious room. Only downside was noise from the room upstairs, they were up and pacing around till the early hours of the morning, running water, flushing toilets etc which kept waking us up and again at 5am. Obviously not the pubs fault and we did mention it to a member of staff on leaving and they did apologise, not that they had to. Lovely friendly staff as well."

The staff (singular) a young guy covering the bar and restaurant was very friendly, hardworking and helpful although stretched which resulted in longer waits at the bar and restaurant. We had starters and mains in the restaurant and the starters, mushrooms in garlic sauce were fine, acceptable nothing special. For main we had Innkeepers Pie and Steak. The pie looked like it had been in a car crash, the broken bits of pastry tasted burnt and the filling was mostly potato. The accompanying veg were over boiled and tasteless and the mash was hotter than the sun so presumably over-microwaved in a similarly under-staffed kitchen. The steak was over-cooked, more well done than MR and the mushroom...

During our recent stay in Castleton, we visited Ye Old Cheshire Cheese as we do every year. Unfortunately, our experience was not up to par. Upon arriving, we found the restaurant to be quite chilly and only one person was on duty, causing a delay in service. Despite placing our order, we waited for an hour before our meals finally arrived. The staff apologized, citing that only one chef was working and the tills had gone down. We were disappointed to see other diners who arrived after us receive their meals before us. We decided to dine elsewhere for the rest of our stay. We hope to give Ye Old Cheshire Cheese another chance next year in the hopes that it will return to its former excellent...

Staying at a local caravan site, we had intended to skip this place as it was the first pub on the road leading into the village, which had reviews that were not at all favourable. Rain forced us in, and we were glad it did, for the reviews we had read bore little resemblance the experience of our visit. The food was good for pub offerings. The service was efficient without being over attentive. The 17th century ambience was charming, and finally, the price for our two meals was very reasonable. So all in all, it is well worth a visit, and they btw welcome dogs.

Do not go to this restaurant. There are many dining options in Castleton, so choose carefully. Yesterday, I booked a table for four at 6:30 pm and arrived at 6:25 pm. We were seated and asked if we had ordered by 6:45 pm, but we had not. After ordering food and drinks, our food arrived at 7:10 pm, but it was cold. I returned my meal to the staff member who had served us, and requested a new dish instead of having the cold one reheated. Two minutes later, my meal was served, warmed up. I suggest avoiding this place.
