Where to start, after all our party ordering our food and paying and at least 15 minutes later to be told three of us who'd ordered scampi that they had none, so we chose again. At least a further 15 minutes later I was told what I'd chosen was not available so had to choose a third dish bearing in mind some if our party were already eating their meals ,but after expressing my annoyance I was refunded the cost of my meal with an apology from an embarrassed member of staff. My partner and I, both in our seventies, visit Squire York almost every week for lunch. We prefer the slightly quieter atmosphere. The food is great value and the wine is reasonably priced. Water is served promptly with ice and lemon. The tables are clean and the chairs are comfortable. The staff are polite and courteous. We appreciate the variety of vegetables, including the three different ways the potatoes are prepared. The beef is tender and flavorful, and all three meat options are consistently good. The stuffing is delicious and the Yorkshire puddings range from crisp to soft. We are pleased that the mustard-cooked vegetables have been removed from the menu, as not everyone enjoys them...
If I could today... the Squire Yorke would receive a minus rating. Arrived for what I had anticipated to be a lovely get together with friends for quite afternoon drinks, not so. Police presence were there upon my arrival and required due to an unruly customer. Lack of bar staff then serving and management afterwards started another altercation at the bar for customers as no orderly fashion in which to set out a clear direction to queue for drink orders and food orders as usual. The greeter was the only good thing about our experience, she was very pleasant. The cleared table that we were directed to had not been wiped. No utensils on table, went back to carvery to request some, was told that utensils would be on the table, but of course they weren't as I would not have been asking for some. I was in the carvery queue for a few minutes until someone came to serve me, no apology for my wait. The staff in general seemed off, there was definitely a poor working atmosphere. The carvery itself was substandard and was in fact the worst carvery I had had the misfortune to have. The gravy was tepid, the Yorkshire pud was under cooked, as was the cauliflower. Really poor service... People behind the bar and waitresses act like they don't even want to be there! I had a discount code and the lady was rolling her eyes at me that she had to ask the supervisor to put the code through... It really put me off. The only nice thing is carvery if you're lucky, don't bother ordering off the menu.
i never complain about anything but this time i feel i have to. What a dirty place, the staff were very poor with the service, the so called manager well what a rude man. We had to go search for our own knives and forks. the tables were dirty and sticky. When i told the manager nicely about the service his reply was jog on.
Visited with my husband, carvery small amounts of meat , potatoes very dry , paid extra for two pigs in blankets, customer behind asked server are these included. He said no then said go on heres two. Tbh so sad to see a once thriving pub going down hill...... Hopefully Hickorys will get the service up and running again .
